Rings, if you would like a simple exchange
Any name pronunciations or special wording notes

Timing at a glance

Quick reference for license effective dates, validity windows, witnesses, and filing.

Pennsylvania — Including Philadelphia

Regular officiant-signed licenses require the marriage to be solemnized by someone authorized under Pennsylvania law. If you’re unsure who qualifies, see our guide to who can officiate a wedding in Pennsylvania. Self-uniting rules differ.

Waiting period: A Pennsylvania marriage license is generally issued on the third day after application. Limited court-approved exceptions may apply.
Valid: 60 days from issuance.
Witnesses: Not required when an officiant presides. Pennsylvania self-uniting licenses require two witnesses.
Filing: I return the completed duplicate certificate within 10 days to the court that issued the license.
Bring: The entire marriage-license packet and photo IDs.

Still need to apply? Read our complete guide to getting a Pennsylvania marriage license, including the waiting period, county application steps, validity, witnesses, and certificate return.

Pro tip: Apply at least one week before your signing, especially around weekends and holidays.

New Jersey Marriage License Timing

Municipal registrar rules vary slightly—always bring IDs.

Waiting period: 72 hours after the application is filed with the local registrar.
Valid: 30 days from issuance.
Witnesses: At least two witnesses must attend and sign. Ever After Vows requires witnesses to be 18 or older.
Filing: I return the completed license and certificate within five days to the local registrar where the marriage occurred.
Bring: Photo IDs and witness IDs if requested by the registrar.

Pro tip: Apply at least one week before the signing to account for weekends, holidays, and registrar availability.
